The Story Of Grafter
Grafter was formed when the founders Tom Cape and Richard Knight realised that it was really hard to find good, local available people to help on some short-term building projects.
They recognised there was a real need to engage flexible workers with business in a fast, free and easy way. Launched in June 2017, Grafter attracted 7,000 registered users to the site in just a few months. The company secured it’s first round of crowdfunding in September 2017 managing to exceed expectations of over-funding by 156%.
With the gig economy replacing traditional ways of working, Tom and Richard recognised that flexible working is becoming the future of work.
Both the founders are firm believers in good practice and fair pay – the service has been designed such that the hourly rate cannot fall below the national minimum wage.
A highly experienced media professional, Richard has helped build a range of media services over the past 20 years including Channel 4’s digital portfolio, YouView and Freeview Play. A Chartered Accountant, Richard leads Grafter’s finance and commercial strategy, driving partnerships to help deliver customer growth in the UK and abroad.
As a property investor Richard is accustomed to hard graft and lives in London with his family.
Tom is a senior digital business executive. Over the past 18 years he has been advising companies on the development of innovative online products. He has helped to launch new digital services for both large and small companies including brands such as Centrica, EE and BSkyB.
Outside of work he renovates property which is how he came up with the idea for Grafter. Tom leads product development and manages the day-to-day operations at Grafter.
